Route:
Palermo Viejo (now split into “Soho” and “Hollywood”) is a peculiar area that combines the flavour of an old, working class neighbourhood with aspects of a globalized city: ethnic restaurants, contemporary design, theme bars. This walk allows us to appreciate its current personality and to discover its rich history: the construction of a neighbourhood at the edge of the city, the urban planification of a working class district (Villa Alvear), the arrival of Armenian, Polish and Italian immigrants to Buenos Aires and the different tendencies of domestic architecture. We’ll also come across the mythical borgesian block, where the argentine author Jorge Luis Borges founded his own personal city as well as his literature.

Ubicado en lo alto de una pronunciada barranca frente al río, el casco histórico de San Isidro es el más antiguo y mejor conservado de esta margen del Plata. A finales del siglo XVIII, las chacras y huertas que abastecían a la ciudad de Buenos Aires devinieron caserones coloniales con aljibes y patios de mayólicas, jardines frondosos y vistas abiertas. Algunos de los más conspicuos vecinos porteños fijaron allí su residencia de manera permanente o temporal, mientras el poblado se urbanizaba lentamente y devenía municipio. En el siglo XX San Isidro se posicionó como el coto más cerrado y exclusivo de todo el Gran Buenos Aires. Entre tipas, adoquines y calzadas de ladrillo, este paseo combina historia, arquitectura, redes familiares, patrimonio, arte, etnografía y joie de vivre.
